Agenda: 54th Annual Meeting, 1975

Transportation Research Board (TRB)
Committee on Transportation-Related Noise (A1F04)
54th Annual Meeting
January 14-16, 1975
Washington, D.C.

Three papers, recommended by the former Noise Subcommittee of the Transportation Environmental Review Process Committee, were presented at Session 31 of the TRB 54th Annual Meeting, January 14, 1975. Two additional papers were discussed in an open meeting of the newly-formed Committee on Transportation-Related Noise (A1F04) on the morning of January 16. Of the several topics discussed at both Session 31 and the open committee meeting, prediction methods for highway traffic noise attracted the most interest.

During the open committee meeting on January 16, Mr. Michael Lash, Chairman of the former Noise Subcommittee, explained the purpose of the new committee and how it was formed. Mr. John Wesler, the newly designated chairman of the new committee, announced that he is soliciting nominations of persons interested in serving on the committee. New committee members will receive formal notification from TRB of their selection.

During a closed meeting of the new committee on the afternoon of January 16, plans were formulated for the committee's 1975 activities.

  1. The committee will sponsor a two-day workshop on highway noise prediction methods, during the fall of 1975. The workshop will invite selected experts and one participant from each State Highway Agency. The participants should be those professionals in each agency most familiar with the day-to-day working aspects of noise prediction.

The goals of the workshop will be:
    1. Collect, identify and share experiences on the state-of-the art of prediction methods.
    2. Present an in-depth explanation of the noise model in NCHRP Project 3-7/4 and show how it differs from the TSC and NCHRP 117 methods.
    3. Identify and prioritize areas of improvement or advancement which should be undertaken in future research efforts.
    4. Prepare, publish, and disseminate a workshop report.

The chairman asked Messrs. Anderson, Cohn and Milliman each to draft a workshop prospectus. The drafts should be mailed to the chairman by February 2, 1975.

  2. The committee agreed to sponsor two sessions at next year's annual meeting. One will be a session dealing with general aspects of transportation noise with the presentation of selected unsolicited papers. The other will be a conference session dealing with construction noise. The committee will request specific presentations from selected experts for this session.
