History:
    ADC40 started out in September 1974 as a subcommittee, with a small group of highway noise researchers who were responsible for much of the work performed in the 1970's on developing a methodology for predicting highway traffic noise. Established as a full committee [initial membership] at the 54th Annual TRB Meeting in January 1975, the then designated A1F04 group held its first review of federal research and a workshop on noise prediction in September of that year. This was the predecessor to the current ADC40 summer meeting. In addition to annual meetings in Washington, D.C., summer meetings have been held since 1979 in states all around the country.

    As part of the growth of the committee, three subcommittees were established in 1979: Aircraft, Highway, and Rail/Mass Transit. Currently, there are over 140 subcommittee members on the roster as well as a large list of "friends".

    The committee activities include: acting as a clearinghouse and meeting place for the exchange of information among professionals in the field (as best exemplified by our summer meetings); presentation of the results of research and the subsequent publication of papers from our annual TRB (winter) meeting; and identifying research needs in our field of expertise (as was done most recently in November 1996 at the FHWA environmental research needs conference).
